KTO August 2008 Available Now!

The August heat calls not only for special attention to personal health, but also that we look after the well-being of late family members as they prepare to depart for the next world. In Japan, Urabone, a transliteration of the Sanskrit ullambana ("deliverance from suffering"), was originally celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, but the introduction of the Gregorian system in the early Meiji Period caused some confusion and though mid-August has become standard throughout most of the country, some areas of Tokyo, Hakodate, Kanazawa, and Okinawa commemorate Obon one month earlier.
This month is doubly solemn as it is also the time of year when the war is remembered. In this issue, Brent Katte explains how a foreign architect came to design Hiroshima's Genbaku Dome, and through her depictions of everyday articles that once belonged to victims of the bombing, noted photographer Ishiuchi Miyako (see cover and center feature) elicits a wide range of memories from the past and reflections on the future.
