CRISIS IN THE CLASSROOM? continued... 3. HOW-I-LOOK SYNDROME: Few people but the Japanese are so conscious about style, form and outward appearance at the expense of substance. To the majority of Japanese, what counts in life seems to be how they look in the eyes of their fellow people, not how they fulfil their self-realisation or how they pursue happiness as an individual with dignity. Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Shinto, Christianity, not even Marxism, could offer a strong ethical standard in this sense. If anything, these ideologies have been abused by the authorities as a regulation forced on their subjects, not themselves. Every philosophy, even every culture, has been used as a political leverage buttressing authority. Therefore, the value standard has never had any philosophical backbone, and people have had no choice but to constantly look around at people nearby for a model example which they can try to emulate. 4. 'DEO-VOLENTE' PSYCHOLOGY:Although they are one of the most hard-working peoples in the world, the Japanese don't seem to have any idea that they are being cheated by the systematised void of rights that encourages free-wheel racketeering practices by the various levels of power-abuses within the System. The only people to benefit are arbitrary administrators, colluding with bureaucrats, who feel not a slightest ethical obligation of accountability, and who prosper at the expense of the welfare of the citizens.
